Grownman's Fast Find Returns!
Does Limp Bizkit Still Suck? Mouthbreather Math-Grind-Core? How many times will I reference the Deftones while reviewing other bands?
Limp Bizkit
Limp Bizkit Still Sucks
I'm not a hater. I'll even admit I cajoled my friend Craig to sit in a room and listen to Limp Bizkit's Significant Other expounding on how heavy some of the songs were. He had listened to what I considered heavy in the past and this wasn't it. Limp's been a polarizing band for many years now. While once associated with groups like Korn, Staind and the Deftones, Fred and Co. quickly fell out of favor with that fanbase. Between the media that surrounded the band, the lack of success of their follow ups(although Unquestionable Truth is a solid album/Gold Cobra has a few "return to form" hits as well) and basically Fred Durst, the band has been on a long hiatus.
Recently during this pandemic, Fred and Co. have made a bit of comeback. Fred's been donning a grey haired wig and "cosplaying" as a stereotypical middle aged dad at high profile festivals. In short, they are now playing the "if you're gone long enough people will forget why they stopped listening to you in the first place" card to some success. So why not put out an album on halloween? Someone pass me one of those edibles.
After a first listen and reading a review from my friend indie wrestler Dick Lane, here's my reaction.
It's a shit show. For the price of admission, you get about three solid tracks, a few skits and a handful of throwaways. Sprinkle in a few acoustic Blink 182 style offerings, one track that sounds like Durst doing a B-Real(cypress hill) impression and maybe one tune (Barnacle) that kinda-sorta feels like Nirvana meets the Deftones for good measure. It's not their worst effort but it definitely falls extremely short of a comeback album. The best three tracks actually feel fresh. The rest of the album can go back and stew in the old hot dog water they pulled them from.
Band: Mouthbreather
Album: I'm Sorry Mr. Salesman
I was doing a quick run through on the mighty bandcamp site and came across Mouthbreather. I've seen the band's name on a few gig posters but until today had not given them a listen. Are they matchcore, are they grind? Are they the ugly spawn of both genres made into something new? "Why am I in a hospital" is a defining moment on the album, complete with time changes and an angry grind delivery. Every song after it is just as good. It's a fun ride. I don't discount the first half of the album, I was just getting to the deep end of a first listen and that second half got it's hooks in me. "Burnout" really delivers with it's unexpected layer of Deftone's-esque vocalizations coming in underneath high pitched instrumentation. Not your typical Grind, Not your typical Mathcore. If you like bands like Code Orange or even Agoraphobic Nosebleed but with a bit more reigned in sound, I think this is definitely a band you should check out.
