MONSTERPIECE THEATER, Volume 3
It's been about 4 years since I've done one of these posts, but I'm bringing Cookie Monster back to refresh your memories on a truly classic metal album which came out at the turn of the millennium (September 2000) and probably has never gotten as much love as it deserves.
SOULFLY: PRIMITIVE
In 1999, Carlos Santana revitalized his popularity with the album "Supernatural", which brilliantly featured big name guest artists on more than half the songs.
A year later, Max Cavalera's Soulfly produced the heavy metal equivalent "Primitive", with guest musicians/vocalists on more than half of the tracks.
First, the big names.
Corey Taylor on "Jumpdafuckup"::
Tom Araya on "Terrorist;"
I LOVE when Tom and Max start trading off vocals. They really complement each other more than I would have expected.
Sean Lennon on "Son Song:"
Fascinating and devastating, this song is perfect.
Mulambo is another perfect song, with absolutely brilliant percussion.

And I think Max one-upped the Anthrax and Public Enemy version of "Bring the Noise" with "In Memory Of . . .", featuring Babatunde Rabouin, Deonte Perry and Justus Olbert of Cutthroat Logic
The combination of aggression and sincerity on this album is matched by few others. Max had lots of pent up aggression due to the death of his stepson Dana, and the album is ruthless and relentless from beginning to end.
"Primitive" is one of those desert island albums for me: definitely one I'll run back into the fire to save.
Hope I either brought back some good memories or introduced you to some epic metal that previously escaped you.
