Welcome back to Grownman's Fast Finds. This week, we look at a classic album by Sigh, the latest release by Godflesh's Justin Broadrick and a new black metal demo by one man band Grimnacht.
As always strap in, sit tight and enjoy the ride.
Sigh - Gallows Gallery
Once in a
great while you come across a band that seems to defy categorization.
Sigh is a band that gives two fucks and I respect the hell out of them
for it. Combine Metal, Jazz, Middle Eastern and Pyschedelic overtones and you get the mesmerizing sound of Sigh. Every damn track is
catchier than the last and there isn't the slightest bit of "tongue in
cheek" irony. This is quite a masterpiece. I honestly didn't
even know that this was 8 years old. This is better than most of the
stuff out there this year.
Jesu - Everyday I Get Closer To The Light From Which I Came
Ok,
so this isn't standard metal. It's definitely on the fringes. Call it
Post Metal if you will. Jesu, the mastermind of Godflesh's Justin K
Broadrick, captures the essence of sadness better than
anyone. Listen to the debut and you'll find yourself right back at the
most depressing time in your life. It'll put you there and pinpoint
every numb feeling you may have felt. This latest cd has a slightly
sunnier disposition. Like if your saddest moment was captured on a late
summer afternoon. You can almost feel the warm dust of the sun rays
falling on your tear stained face as Broadrick's naked shoe gazey
riffs settle all around you. Slow, epic music accompanied by sparce vocals. A
must own.
Grimnacht - Lost in the Blizzard of Eternity(demo)
I came across Grimnacht this week and was pretty blown away. The musicianship and songcrafting on this is beautiful. The strained vocals contrasting with gorgeous rhythm create epic waves of sound that are both catchy and accessible. I was immediately hooked and am looking forward to what comes next from Grimnacht.
