Opinions Are Like Assholes #3 [Sigh, Oranssi Pazuzu, Faithful Breath]

Here we go again. We get a little weird on you this time and then come back around with some ol' traditional Heavy Metal.

Artist: SIGH
Album: IN SOMNIPHOBIA
Song: L’EXCOMMUNICATION A MINUIT
Year: 2012

 GROWNMAN SAYS:

Yikes, are you serious? Started off sounding like the musical intro to an old vhs tutorial video about word burning. The keyboardist is having a wonderful time isn't he? The vocalist, yeah he's kinda annoying. The lounge stylings mixed with Black Metal singing is confusing and that's kind of Sigh's modus operandi. They always keep you on your toes and sometimes i just don't feel like dancing. I'll pass on this tune since I've heard more listenable stuff from them. Or have I?

FORK TONGUE SAYS:

Freakout music. If I didn't know any better I'd think this was a joke. Sigh has never been my cup tea. Talented musicians no doubt, just not my thing. I like the subtle little King Diamond humming tribute in the background though. I'm sure they have more traditional songs. Maybe we'll pop across one for this column someday. Until then, I will not be listening to Sigh.

Artist: FAITHFUL BREATH
Album: GOLD N' GLORY
Song: PLAY THE GAME
Year: 1984

GROWNMAN SAYS:

Yeah, here we go. This touches the soft spot I have for early 80's NWOBHM. Takes me right back to the first time I watched a Judas Priest video on my grandmother's tv that was just hooked up with cable. I dig this song. It's gotta a tad bit of the Misfits sound hidden in there if you look for it. The echoey riffage and the "so bad it's good" production gives me the sudden urge to pump my fist at the wall and don a leather vest. Good stuff.

FORK TONGUE SAYS:

Again, I'm with Grownman. Love that NWOBHM sound. There are so many bands from that era that are being unearthed right now and I love it. Check out High Roller Records for all kinds of obscure NWOBHM re-issues. Anyway this is good stuff. Hey Sigh, you don't always have to reinvent the wheel. Just write a good riff, have a catchy hook and BOOM.

Artist: ORANSSI PAZUZU
Album: VALONIELU
Song: URAANISULA
Year: 2013

GROWNMAN SAYS:

Psychedelic black metal? Very slow build into some grunge, wasn't expecting that. The vocalist sounds like a creature from the Hobbit. Pretty sick. Some 12 minute songs go by quickly. This track feels like it's been 24 minutes. Some interesting parts occur but for the most part I'm quite bored. I couldn't sit through an entire album at this pace.

FORK TONGUE SAYS:

I really enjoy this band but this definitely isn't the best representation of them and out of their 3 albums this is probably their weakest. This track felt about right to me. The first 5 minutes or so are very repetitive and then comes the soft breakdown in the middle and the freakout for the final few minutes. Regardless of the fact that this is their weakest album, this is going to end up on my year end list.

Next week we tackle...

Agalloch - In The Shadow of Our Pale Companions

Jess and The Ancient Ones - Sulfur Giants

Magic Circle  - Magic Circle /Magic Circle/Cloven In Two
