Red Fang - Whales and Leeches
reviewed by Grownman
Take two parts Kyuss, one part Queens of the Stoned Age, a pinch of Mastadon, a sprinkling of Sabbath "Fairies wear boots" Dust and pour a whole lot of cheap beer over it. What do you get? RED FANG
Whales and Leeches is Red Fang's third album. It's a real messy mix of stoner and doom metal. Their first single, "Blood Like Cream", sounds very much like a QOTSA song. So much so that I'm not a huge fan of it. The majority of the tracks on this are similar to their last two albums. There are a few highlights like the Black Flag-esque "NO HOPE" and the doomy "DAWN RISING"(guest vocals by Yob's Mike Scheid).
Red Fang is a band I really want to like. Their videos are hilarious and are the reason I tried to get into them in the first place. The band's sound really hasn't progressed from the primal sound of their first recordings. Their sound kind of gets lost in the mix of so many other bands in the genre. I'm left wondering when Red Fang will veer from their influences and start creating something completely unique.
