Opinions Are Like Assholes...

Everybody's got one.

In this [hopefully weekly] column, 3 songs will be selected randomly for myself and Grownman to comment on, exposing ourselves to new music and hopefully you the reader to new music. I'm sure there will be lots of differing opinions along the way. At least I hope so. Who wants to hear people agree on music all the time? Grownman and I veer in tastes and also crossover, so this should be fun.

Artist: HYPOCRISY
Album: HYPOCRISY
Song: UNTIL THE END
Year: 1999

GROWNMAN SAYS:

I really love this track. I mean it's not the Hypocrisy sound I remember. I tried getting into them in the 90's after seeing advertisements for their music in Terrorizer and recall not digging their sound at the time. But this track is phenomenal and fresh sounding for 1999. Is this what they sound like now? I guess I'll have to find out.

FORK TONGUE SAYS:

Even though this came from my collection I've never gotten into Hypocrisy. I'm not even sure I've ever sat down and listened to a full album. Well, I may have to after this as I really enjoyed it but I can be a sucker for slower paced shit. Not what I was expecting at all. I'm with Grownman, I'm going to have to delve into some Hypocrisy.

Artist: ORANGE GOBLIN
Album: A EULOGY FOR THE DAMNED
Song: THE FILTHY AND THE FEW
Year: 2012

 GROWNMAN SAYS:

Always remember them for the split they did with Electric Wizard. This track isn't quite their best. OG seem to fluctuate between the dirty biker tunes and psychedelic doom. I side with the doom.

FORK TONGUE SAYS:

Speaking of Electric Wizard, this type of metal should have that fuzzed out sound. While the riffs and vocals here are pretty generic I think with a beefed up production I may enjoy it. The production is really thin and lifeless just like the musical and vocal performance. I like biker culture and biker metal like Satan's Satyrs and this just doesn't hold up to that.

Artist: PAGAN ALTAR
Album: THE LORDS OF HYPOCRISY
Song: THE MASQUERADE
Year: 2004

GROWNMAN SAYS:

Sounds like a cross between Neil Young and Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull fronting mid 80's Sabbath. All things I love. There is a genuine beauty in the imperfections of the vocals. Pagan Altar time and again impress me. There are bands that completely rip off Sabbath and there are bands that celebrate the band's spirit while still creating something unique. Pagan Altar are one of the best at making music today that carries that spirit of the past.

FORK TONGUE SAYS:

Grownman said this beautifully. The vocals of Terry Jones are an aqcuired taste but to me some of the best in the history of this style. Those imperfections bring a soul to the music that I haven't heard in a long time. Something to the degree of what Phil Lynott did for Thin Lizzy. Not only great vocals but great lyrics. His brother Alan Jones may also be one of the best guitarist to play this style. So much goddamn soul and emotion in those riffs. Really, The Lords of Hypocrisy is a desert island album to me, an album I can't live without and I could gush about for thousands of words. To think that sound came from 2004! I really wish they got their due in the early 80's because I'd have a lot more material to sift through. Mythical and Magical and Judgement of The Dead are almost as good. Buy everything from this band. I can't recommend them enough.

Ok, that's it from us. Keep an eye out next week when we talk about Midnight - Take You To Hell, Odz Manouk - The Indisciplinarian and Hooded Menace - Rituals of Mortal Cremation.
